Book Nook – Daughters of Fortune Pack, vols. 1–4

Daughters of Fortune, Vols 1-4“A baby girl – not a boy! I’ll name her Cameron,” thought Keagan. “Oh, another girl! This one will be Blair” – and yet another girl! Keagan was thoroughly disgusted. “This one will be Jackie.” If he couldn’t get a son, he’d at least give his daughters boys’ names.

“The Daughters of Fortune,” by Judith Pella, takes us from the beginning of WWII through the years after. Each daughter is involved in a different area – Cameron, a tenacious reporter, in Russia, Blair, the rebellious one, in the Philippines, and Jackie, the compliant one, in Los Angeles.

There are four books in the series, and the activities these ladies are involved in will keep you on the edge of your seat. Will Keagan ever be proud of his girls? Will past mistakes ever be forgiven? Will relationships be mended? If you like a little suspense, a little romance, a little adventure, this series is for you!

Spring is just around the corner, although I’m writing this in December, and Christmas is very close at hand. I pray you all enjoyed your December festivities and are looking forward to 2024 with renewed hope and a determination to live the best life possible! -Alicia

Book Nook – My Friend, Anne Frank

My Friend, Anne FrankI got this review from Pat.  Pat believes this book should be read again and again.  The review of My Friend, Anne Frank by Hannah Pick-Glosar.

“We all know the story of Anne Frank. This down-to- earth book tells the true story of two young girls, Anne & Hannah, how they met and became friends. During the war they were separated. Hannah was in a concentration camp and she thought that Anne was hiding in Switzerland. Actually, Anne was in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. They did meet once when Hannah stole food for Anne but they were separated again. Their lives were tormented and eventually Anne was taken, but Hannah was saved.” Pat believes this book should be read again and again

Book Nook – The Note

https://a.co/d/c4jDRP1I recently re-read The Note, by Angela Hunt.

What fun it was to watch the DVD of this story! Then—I read The Note II and watched that DVD! I understand there is a third DVD, but I can’t find out if there is a third book.

After a plane crash a note is found on the beach near the crash. Addressed simply to “T.“ Payton, a reporter, endeavors to find a surviving child whose name begins with the letter T.

You will enjoy the search and the surprise ending. Enjoy Autumn and the up-coming holidays! -Alicia

Book Nook – The Newcomer

The NewcomerKay Andrews is the author of The Newcomer.

The Mummering Surf Motel is a bit old – a bit rundown – but this is where Lottie finds herself, asleep in her car in the parking lot. Her 4-year-old niece, Maya, is snug in her car seat. A long way from New York to Florida! Joe, the local cop and the son of the motel owner, wakes her up, demanding she leave immediately. “But I want to rent a room—and I was hoping someone would check out soon!”

One thing leads to another – a murder – a ring of thieves – deception – intrigue – and of course, love. It’s a good read!

Book Nook – Savannah Sunrise

Savannah Sunrise
Savannah Sunrise

On an entirely different note: several of my friends gather every other Saturday to watch a DVD.

Years ago, I was introduced to Savannah Sunrise. Oh, my. What a delightful story. I keep a record of books I’ve read and DVD’s I’ve watched, and I’ve watched this one at least 17 times! I often forget to record, so who knows how many times I’ve watch it!
Each time seems like the first, and I laugh heartily at the funny parts, and tear up at the sentimental parts. Everyone I’ve shared it with have been entertained and delighted.

Heath was divorced a number of years ago, but his divorce was amicable. He wasn’t interested in pursuing another relationship. But – guess what? He and Julie started talking a bit – then having coffee together – Where might this lead?

Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Treasury

Are there any trivia lovers out there? Well, here’s a book for you!

It is Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Treasury. I think there are several Uncle John’s books out there. They are compiled by the Bathroom Readers’ Institute and the Bathroom Readers’ Hysterical Society. The book is filled with trivia—how this or that was invented, how many eggs can an ant lay at a time, where does the phrase “Let the Cat out of the Bag” come from, etc. Fun stuff

Book Nook – The Island of Heavenly Daze

By Alicia Laser

The Island of Heavenly Daze
The Island of Heavenly Daze

Halo, readers,

Are you a re-reader? Is there such a word? Well, I enjoy reading books I’ve read in years past. This month I’m enjoying the series by Lori Copeland and Angela Hunt called “The Island of Heavenly Daze”. Seems the sign painter couldn’t spell and printed DAZE instead of DAYS. The first settlement contained seven structures—six homes and the church. Just before the founder passed, he prayed and asked God to send angels to guard the seven structures and families. Well, He did, and Micah, Abner, Caleb, Yakov, Zuriel, Elezar and Gavriel are carrying out their assignments. What adventures they have!

I urge you to check with your local library and meet the interesting inhabitants and share in their lives. You won’t be sorry!

What have you re-read recently?

I pray your “daze” are heavenly!!

Book Nook – Across the Blue

By Alicia Laser

Across the Blue
Across the Blue

Friends!

Spring is coming, It’s my favorite season. Winter is soon over and warmer weather is coming. It’s that way in Kansas, anyway!

Here’s a book that will educate you and entertain you. The title is “Across the Blue”, and the author is Carrie Turansky. The year is 1909. The Wright Brothers have demonstrated their marvelous flying machine in England, and James Drake and Professor Sneed are working hard to perfect their model. They really want James to be the first to fly across the English Channel. Of course, there is the beautiful rich young lady, Bella, who is fascinated with flying and in being a journalist. It’s educational because of the development of the flying industry, and entertaining because – how will James win the approval of Bella’s father?

And if you want pure entertainment and humor, pick up three books by Juneau Black—the pen name of authors Jocelyn Cole and Sharon Nagel. The titles are “Shady Hollow”, “Cold Clay”, and “Mirror Lake”. A few of the characters are Vera Vixen, the cunning foxy reporter, BW Stone, the every-thing-in-black-and-white editor of the local newspaper and Reginald von Beaverpelt, the owner and operator of the sawmill. What is so fascinating about the entire cast of characters is they are all animals. You may guess—Vera, a fox, BW, a skunk, Reginald a beaver, and so on. There is always a murder involved, and Vera is the investigative reporter who assists Deputy Orville Braun (can you guess? A large brown bear) in solving the mystery. Her best friend, Lenore Lee, the raven who owns and operates Nevermore Books, always has amazing insight. Her love for mystery thrillers is definitely an asset.  The cleverness and creativity of these two ladies is just amazing. You will enjoy a few giggles as you read these three books.

Go on a reading spree in 2023!

Book Nook – The Captive Heart

By Alicia Laser

The Captive Heart
The Captive Heart

Fellow Readers,

Michelle Griep entertained me with a story entitled “The Captive Heart“. Starting in London in 1770, and ending up in the backwoods of the Carolinas in Colonial America, Eleanor is in for the adventure of a lifetime. Money and a letter of recommendation was sewn in the hem of her skirt but when landing in America, she finds it is gone. With no money and no recommendation, she was sold to Samuel who needed a mother for his small daughter. Are the rumors about Samuel true? Can Eleanor survive life in a shanty of a house? How will she ever learn to cook? What happens when she meets bear? This is a very well-written novel, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend you contact your local library and put this one on hold!
